Some weddings are beautiful because of the venue. Others are beautiful because of the story behind them. Sarah and Doug’s backyard wedding in Virginia was both!
Held at their family homes in Middlebrook, Virginia, this wedding was deeply personal, nostalgic, and full of meaning that simply couldn’t be replicated at a traditional venue. From saying their vows beside a pond Sarah’s father spent the last year transforming to ending the night with fireworks, every part of the day reflected their history together and the community that surrounded them.
Sarah and Doug’s story started long before they began dating.
Sarah moved to Middlebrook when she was eight years old and Doug was seven. Their families were friends, their siblings played in a bluegrass band together in high school, and they grew up less than a mile apart.
After Sarah graduated from UVA and before she started veterinary school, the two reconnected and their friendship quickly became something more.
Their proposal was equally meaningful. During Sarah’s clinical year of vet school, Doug convinced her to change plans for a weekend trip and head to his family’s home in Reedville instead. Reedville had always been a special place in their relationship. It was where they first discussed marriage and how much their relationship meant to one another just five months into dating.
On that same dock where those conversations took place, Doug proposed.
One of the most special parts of this backyard wedding in Virginia was the location itself.
Rather than choosing a traditional venue, Sarah and Doug utilized both of their family homes, located less than a mile apart in Middlebrook.
The ceremony took place at Sarah’s family home before guests were transported to Doug’s family home for cocktail hour and the reception.
From a planning perspective, moving guests from hotels to one home and then to a second home definitely added another layer of logistics. But it was absolutely worth it.
The entire day felt rooted in their story. These were the roads they grew up on, the properties where their families built memories, and the place where their relationship first began.
One of my favorite parts of this backyard wedding in Virginia was the ceremony location.
Over the past year, Sarah’s father had been beautifying the pond on their family property, adding a waterfall and elevating the landscaping around it. It created the most beautiful backdrop for the couple’s vows.
June weather in Virginia can always be a little unpredictable, but we were fortunate to have a gorgeous day. It was a little warm during the ceremony, but plenty of refreshments, fans, and umbrellas helped keep guests comfortable.
As guests arrived, they were greeted with champagne and Miller High Life — the champagne of beer — which immediately set the tone for a fun and relaxed celebration.
And then came the confetti poppers! The ceremony exit was absolutely wild in the best way possible. It definitely created some incredible moments for the couple and their guests.
I loved how many details of this wedding felt personal without feeling overdone.
The coasters waiting at each place setting featured the names of the two streets where Sarah and Doug grew up. Then during dinner, a few of the groomsmen surprised everyone by carrying in an actual intersection sign displaying those street names. It was one of those details that perfectly captured the couple’s story and had guests smiling immediately.
Throughout the day, there were thoughtful touches that felt uniquely them while still keeping the focus on celebrating with family and friends.
If there’s one thing guests definitely didn’t leave talking about, it was being hungry.
Cocktail hour and the reception included a local ice cream truck. This was a huge hit on a warm June day!
For dinner, guests could choose from multiple stations featuring Asian, Mexican, and BBQ cuisine, ensuring everyone found something they loved.
Sarah and Doug also put their own spin on a traditional champagne tower. They opted for a margarita tower alongside their cake cutting! It was fun, unexpected, and perfectly fit the relaxed energy of the evening.
To close out the celebration, Sarah and Doug brought back a tradition from Doug’s brother’s wedding, which I had also planned back in 2022: fireworks. And just like the first time, they were a huge hit.
It felt like the perfect ending to a wedding that was rooted in family, history, and home.
Sarah and Doug’s backyard wedding in Virginia truly could not have happened anywhere else.
The homes, the roads, the pond, the families, the memories — every piece of the day was connected to their story.
Hosting a wedding on private property requires more planning and logistics than a traditional venue. But it also creates opportunities for a level of meaning and personalization that is hard to recreate.
