Picture this – a bar in the West Village in NYC. Girl sees boy, asks him to buy her a drink, and the next thing you know they’re having a Virginia winery wedding at the peak of summer. Okay, so there’s a little bit more to the story, but that’s the gist of Sophie and Zarek!
They wanted a venue that had great views with an outdoor ceremony. They also had a lot of guests coming from out of town so wanted to be close to a major airport. With all of this in mind, we decided on the Leesburg area to begin our search.
After touring Stone Tower Winery, we knew it was absolutely perfect for them. I’ve had weddings there before, so I knew it was the charming venue we were seeking. With sweeping views of the vineyard which made for an absolutely breathtaking backdrop. Nestled just outside Leesburg atop the beautiful Hogback Mountain, this venue provides so many options for the different parts of a wedding day. There are lots of ceremony locations from amazing water and mountain views to dreamy indoor locations. We chose the hillside for S+Z’s ceremony. The Farmhouse is the perfect getting ready location, and the perfectly titled Vineyard View Ballroom has large windows showcasing the vines.
Guests were enjoying the wine and hummus station (a must-have from the bride) at cocktail hour when we were about to have a reception room reveal for the couple. Right before we opened the door, my assistant, Alexa, told me the greenery had fallen from the ceiling over the dance floor. No problem – we are always ready for anything that the day can throw at us! We had to act fast, grab a ladder and the strongest tape possible to get it back up within minutes. Luckily that was the only time it fell and stayed put the rest of the night.
I love when couples use family for more than just their wedding party. Sophie’s sister Olivia was not only the Maid of Honor, but also the officiant. Sophie’s dad also played the piano during cocktail hour. Sophie and Zarek had other little things that were so perfectly them. Instead of a cake cutting, they did a champagne tower. They aren’t big on sweets, so why not focus on the bubbly!
The night ended with one of my all time favorite bands rocking all of the couple’s requests, like All The Small Things and What’s My Age Again by Blink-182. Sophie, in her killer party dress, and Zarek with his bow up guitar, and the rest of their friends and family danced the night away until the amazing last song of Mr. Brightside. What an amazing way to close out a beautiful Virginia winery wedding!
