There’s something undeniably special about a backyard wedding. Each one feels deeply personal, rooted in comfort, family, and familiarity. Whether it’s the nostalgia of getting ready in your childhood bedroom or saying “I do” surrounded by the landscape that’s been part of your story, backyard weddings carry a kind of magic you just can’t replicate at a venue.
But as any planner will tell you, these events come with their own unique logistics. From parking and power to lighting and restrooms, you’re essentially building a venue from scratch. With the right team and thoughtful planning, though, it can be one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate.
Here are four of my favorite backyard weddings that prove how special and beautiful these at home celebrations can be.
Sam and J’s wedding took place at the groom’s parents’ house in Middlebrook, and it truly captured everything that makes backyard weddings so special. We set the tent inside their large horse ring, which gave us a perfect flat area for dinner and dancing. The ceremony was held in the fields overlooking the property, and since we wanted to make sure guests didn’t have to hike in heels, we brought in a shuttle to transport everyone to and from the ceremony site.
There was plenty of small-town charm, from the groom helping with setup on a tractor (until I had to wrangle him into changing into his suit!) to the father of the groom hopping on the gator to fetch a backup generator when we had a quick power hiccup. The night ended with fireworks lighting up the sky which was a perfect finale that is always a crowd pleaser
Grace and Adrian’s wedding at her childhood home, Rose Hill Farm, was as personal as it gets. The ceremony entrance was one of my favorites! The wedding party and bride appeared from over the hill, walking down toward the guests for a breathtaking, cinematic moment. Grace’s dad drove her up to the processional path in a tractor, which tipped slightly backward on the hill (no injuries, just laughs and a story that lead the photographer and I to just walk up the hill after!).
Their wedding decor incorporated nods to the farm’s name with rose-embroidered napkins, bright florals, and koozie favors. As an added treat, they rented a popcorn maker for late-night snacks, and I got to make popcorn for guests myself! The result was the perfect blend of playful, sentimental, and down-to-earth which is exactly what a backyard wedding should be.
This backyard wedding is one of my favorites for how it transformed an ordinary space into something truly magical. The celebration took place at the bride’s parents’ home, where Madi and Alex also lived in a cozy cottage just steps from the ceremony site.
They buried bourbon in the yard before the wedding day (a Southern good luck tradition) and dug it up it to share with their wedding party. The property’s micro-mini Highland cows, Coconut and Pistachio, even made an appearance for photos. Adorable doesn’t even begin to cover it!
Utilizing the space you have is key with backyard weddings. To make the most of the space for Madi and Alex’s big day, we turned their unused barn into a cocktail hour area, embracing the country vibe. My favorite detail was the shelves lining the barn filled with black-and-white photos of the couple and their guests, creating a sentimental moment for everyone in attendance.
Madi and Jon’s day proved that backyard weddings can be both intimate and lively. They envisioned a morning ceremony with just 20 guests, followed by a brunch overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. After brunch, everyone relaxed before the space was flipped for a fun, laid-back evening celebration by the pool.
The evening party by the pool included lawn games, two food trucks (Otto’s Eats and Tacos Gomez), and 100+ guests enjoying the sunset. It was the perfect mix of elegant and relaxed. The couple even kicked off the weekend with a pickleball tournament on the family’s court which a nod to the groom, who is a pickleball teacher. The weather was perfect all day, and guests ended the night with donuts from the couple’s favorite local shop, Sbrocco’s.
After planning so many backyard celebrations, there are a few key things every couple should keep in mind. Parking and transportation are always the biggest considerations so plan for shuttles, golf carts, or valet to help guests get around comfortably. You’ll also need to think through power, lighting, and restrooms. Multiple generators are a must, as is renting a restroom trailer (trust me, you don’t want 100+ people using your home bathrooms). And once the sun sets, proper lighting is key for both ambience and safety.
If you’re willing to invest in the logistics, the payoff is incredible: a completely customized, meaningful celebration that feels like home, because it is home!
There’s nothing quite like watching a couple say “I do” surrounded by the people and places that mean the most to them. If you’re dreaming of a day that feels comfortable and sentimental, a backyard wedding might be the perfect fit.
