If there’s ever been a venue that captures the timeless elegance and historic charm of Washington, DC, it’s The Mayflower Hotel. Callie and Zach’s DC hotel wedding was the perfect combination of classic, romantic, and celebratory. It is everything you’d hope for in a black-tie optional affair in the nation’s capital.
From our very first conversation, I could tell Callie and Zach had a clear vision. They wanted a refined, heartfelt day that honored both their love story and their shared appreciation for history. The Mayflower was the perfect fit. Opened in 1925, this historic hotel is full of gold accents, soaring ceilings, and even a Juliet balcony overlooking the ballroom perfect for the live string quartet Callie and Zach had during the ceremony.
Callie and Zach first met on Hinge in August 2023, and Callie says she “knew right away.” After getting engaged in Chicago, it only made sense that they’d return to DC. They were going to say “I do” where their story first began.
Guests were greeted at the welcome reception with Chicago-style Garrett Mix popcorn — cheese and caramel perfection, of course! The celebration continued with a French 75 as their signature cocktail, followed by a mini champagne tower that made for a perfect photo op for the bride and groom.
Their ballroom design was timeless and romantic. There were lush florals, candlelight, and elegant gold accents that tied in beautifully with the Mayflower’s historic aesthetic. One of my favorite features was the dual mirrored seating charts framed with florals and flickering candles. It created the most stunning entrance for guests as they entered the ballroom.
The bride and groom also had a live guest portrait painter, Spencer Grace. It was such a fun and unique touch!
The couple’s custom monogram, designed by a family friend, appeared throughout the wedding day — from the signage to the dance floor. It really added that personal touch that tied it all together. And the cake! Zach was so involved in the cake design process. I absolutely loved this as most times grooms don’t really care about that detail.
The entire wedding party headed off property for photos around the DC monuments when their bus had a VERY MINOR tap with a city bus. Truly the most unfortunate luck. While everyone was safe (and our driver handled it professionally), time was slipping away. So my team jumped into action, hopping in a car to bring Callie and Zach back to the hotel. We finished portraits in the Mayflower’s beautiful hallways and historic spaces, which was beautiful in its own right.
Later that night, the photo and video team snuck the couple away again (with the hotel’s permission) to grab a few portraits at one of The Mayflower’s private bars. The perfect quiet moment amidst the excitement.
From macaroons passed after dinner to the bride’s brother surprising guests with boxes of pizza on the dance floor, every moment of this DC hotel wedding was filled with joy, laughter, and genuine connection.
Between the historic setting, thoughtful details, and Callie and Zach’s radiant energy, this celebration felt like a modern love story wrapped in timeless elegance. It was a perfect reflection of who they are.
Wendy. It’s hard to believe how much we accomplished together in the year we spent planning, from miles and miles apart. Your dedication and heart were felt every step of the way, and I’m so grateful for the trust you placed in me to help plan your daughter’s day. It was such an honor to create a day that reflected your family’s love so beautifully. It was a true joy to see all your love and effort shine through on such a special day!
